BWV 1138.1
In Johann Sebastian Bach's time, the election or inauguration of a new town council, normally an annual event, was celebrated with a church service. A council election cantata, cantata written for such occasion was indicated with the term (council election) or (council change). Bach composed Church cantata (Bach)#New council, such cantatas for Mühlhausen and for Leipzig. Five of these cantatas (BWV 71, BWV 119, 119, BWV 120.1, 120.1, BWV 29, 29 and BWV 69.2, 69.2) are entirely extant. One further cantata, BWV 193.2, lost part of its music, and there are another five that have only been known to exist (two for Mühlhausen), or for which only the text is extant (three for Leipzig). Bach worked in Mühlhausen from 1707 to 1708. His first council election cantata for that town was performed and printed in 1708. Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach (28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is known for his orchestral music such as the '' Brandenburg Concertos''; instrumental compositions such as the Cello Suites; keyboard works such as the ''Goldberg Variations'' and ''The Well-Tempered Clavier''; organ works such as the '' Schubler Chorales'' and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and vocal music such as the ''St Matthew Passion'' and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach revival he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. The Bach family already counted several composers when Johann Sebastian was born as the last child of a city musician in Eisenach. After being orphaned at the age of 10, he lived for five years with his eldest brother Johann Christoph, after which he continued his musical education in Lüneburg.
